Think Dirty, Shop Clean! Now lets get into the dirty talk…
I have been trying to limit the amount of toxins I use in my everyday products and in doing so, I stumbled on the app, Think Dirty. Let me tell you, it’s a real game changer and on top of that, it’s FREE.
What I love about it: the app rates the products on a scale of 0-10, 10 being a product that contains one or multiple toxic ingredients. You can scan the bar code of a product you already have or are looking to purchase, search the product by name, or just type in a general description, such as “body lotion.”
It goes as far as rating every single ingredient in each product for the very curious! Or if you just want a quick “bad” or “good” check out the score and you are good to go!
Another great feature: you can directly click an Amazon link within Think Dirty to purchase any item in a split second. Amazon Prime is life!!!
I was pretty shocked to find out that the cosmetic industry standards aren’t as high as one would hope for ingredients in products that are directly being applied to our skin, our body’s largest organ.
There are several ingredients that are used in products that could potentially be carcinogenic or even endocrine disruptors.
We care about the ingredients in the food we are eating, it only makes sense to care about the ingredients in the products we are using on our body’s largest organ.
Because I still care greatly about the effectiveness of the products I am using, I decided that if something was a 4 or lower on the dirty meter, than that would be a product I would be good to use. I didn’t want to get overly paranoid and be too “crunchy” because let’s face it, I desperately NEED these beauty products to look somewhat presentable! I have been doing a lot of research on non-toxic makeup and that will be my next transition, i’ll keep you posted!
Below are some of the swaps I have made so far that I have been really happy with:
Please note that the Beauty By Earth Self Tanner was not in the Think Dirty database yet so I researched it in the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, which is another great resource I would recommend!
Do you have any non-toxic beauty products you would recommend? Help a sister out!
